Volunteer Firefighters

 

The Platte Valley Fire Protection District is a combination department consisting of paid administration and 85% volunteers.   The District relies on the dedication of these volunteers to provide professional emergency medical and fire response services.

 

Our personnel are a diverse base of people with a variety of training, skills and a commitment to the District.  Without these people, the Platte Valley Fire Protection District would not be thriving as it is today.

 

Our volunteers are not only committed to bettering themselves mentally and physically, but also willing to put their lives on the line at a moment's notice for the safety and benefit of all.


Requirements For Volunteer Firefighter Applicants:

   
  1.  Minimum of 18 Years of Age (21 to be eligible for Engineer).


  2.  High School Diploma or GED.


  3.  Valid Colorado Driver’s License with a safe driving record - minor traffic offenses are at the sole discretion of the Platte
       Valley Fire Chief.


  4.  Successfully pass a background investigation. No felony convictions. All other charges/convictions aside are at the sole
       discretion of the Platte Valley Fire Chief.


  5.  Must work well with others in a team environment; be able to articulate clearly; work effectively and maintain a
       professional attitude/image in stressful situations; maintain confidentiality requirements; and understand and follow district
       protocols and state laws.


  6.  Must have the physical capacity and stamina necessary to complete all day-to-day and fire ground operations quickly,
       effectively, and without injury to oneself or others.


  7.  Ability to commit to trainings/meetings held every Monday night from 19:00 – 22:00 hrs.


  8.  Willingness to attend additional training events held on other days/evenings of the week.


  9.  Available to respond to calls while on-duty. On-duty hours consist of 20:00 – 06:00, every fourth night. Members will be
       assigned to a company and will be responsible for covering calls and completing station duties during their company’s on-
       duty nights.


10.  Firefighter: Level 1 - Must obtain within two years of hire and maintain training hours to keep certification current.


11.  Hazardous Materials: Awareness Level - Must obtain within two years of hire and maintain training hours to keep
       certification current.


12.  Emergency Medical Technician or First Responder - Must obtain within two years of hire and maintain training hours to
       keep certification current.


Application Process


The Platte Valley Fire Protection District accepts applications for the position of Volunteer Probationary Firefighter year-round.  Applications can be downloaded online here or by visiting the Platte Valley Main Station and requesting an application packet.


Once received, the a panel of volunteers will review applications, perform interviews, and fill available positions at the January and July Business Meetings.  All applicants are subject to a criminal background check and work/character references are contacted.


After completing the Application and Hiring Process, volunteers will be required to complete probationary trainings, issued gear, paging equipment, and appropriate PPE.  After six months time, probationary volunteers will be eligible for benefits provided including but not limited to pension, death and disability and living quarter assignments.
 

Requirements to Complete the Application and Hiring Process:


1.  Submit a signed & completed application.

2.  Pass the physical agility test provided by PVFPD

3.  Complete a written test provided by the PVFPD

4.  Complete a member interview consisting of a panel of volunteers

5.  Complete a Chiefs’ interview
